180

material costs, and the pilot's pay.

6.6 SUMMARY
In conclusion, the trial program carried out in 1977

and 1978 demonstrated the technical feasioility of clear-

air seeding using silver iOdide pyrotechnic flares mounted

on an aircraft. To ti1e lee of the Colorado Rockies, at

least, clear ice-supersaturated conditions can be forecast
12 to 24 hours in advance using information available at a

second-order National Weather Service facility. However,

in most of the situations which we were able to seed, the

seeding would have had little useful impact on the radiation

budget near the ground. Because the supersaturated regions

were generally formed in a standing wave pattern, seeding
material did not remain in supersaturated regions and clouds
formed were carried into regions of descent and warming

where they sublimated away. Finally, few reliable measure-

ments were obtained of cloud microphysical and radiometric

properties. Long term dispersion characteristics could not
be studied.

6.7 ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

The operations described in this chapter Were carried

out by J.W. "Bill" Bullock of AIRO, Inc., and me with

support from Bernard vonnegut and Sally Marsh in Albany.

Dick Brandigar, Hugh Christian and Bob Mutu provided essen-

tial aircraft and electronic services.
