-.,ft-

~ '.0

D'('=>C.\,~0(,) of Odwt..i\U- - Bulloc.k. 1=>ru\rc+
;::.~ G'Or'"-,\ \fI\)\\I'1.y, C";:,U

GENERAL

The proposed project will involve a release of a small amount of

seeding material at high altitudes in clear air which is supersaturated

with respect to ice. The proposed research would take place over

northwestern - northcentral regions of Colorado. Its object would be to

create a small artificial ice cloud (commonly referred to as a contrail)

comparable to one produced by a small jet aircraft. The seeder aircraft

will then follow the development of the ice contrail for as long as

is pr ac tical.

The project will be carried out using a modified Schweizer single

engine propeller driven aircraft operating out of the Colorado Springs Munici-

pal ~ Peterson Air Force Base Airport. The proposed experiment would be

carried out under the general supervision of Dr. Bernard Vonnegut (State

University of New York at Albany, 1400 Washington Ave., Albany, New York)

and Professor Lewis Grant (Colorado State University, Fort Collins, Colorado),

and under the direct supervision of Mr. Andrew Detwiler also from SUNY-A.

The project constitutes a direct supplement to the CSU research presently

in progress to study the processes involved in extended areas of effects

from weather modification. This project will extend the capability to

examine the persistence of ice crystals leaving the seeded area. The

proposed project would start on February II, 1978 and end on March 31, 1978.
