'.; .,~~.~f7/.; ~;. ~.

'j

"j

"181'gel:'. ..Two separate storms wi thin the complex of storms passed Over
"IJd4g.~::ti.tf Air'port hailing there both times. A strong gust front
pU'sh~,a>'6ut from the complex and helped trigger new storms in eastern
Finney County. Boroe cloud base seeding was performed in extreme
eastern Finney; the cloud top aircraft briefly seeded as the storm
moved into Hodgeman County. All seeding ended by .4:20 p.m. with no
further etorlns affecting the target area.

JUNE 15th---OFERATIONAt DAY #12: By ~:20 p.m" HDT, a small NE-8W line
of celIe began to grow lar'ger with all planes scrambled into action;
the clOUd top plane Was finishing up necessary maintenance begun the
day before and unavailable at tirst. The line of cells lay on a line
from Sublette SW across Hugoton then into the Oklahoma and Texas
panhandles. Cloud bases were very high, around 13,000 feet m. $, 1. I
when eeading began at 2:36 p.m., MDt. Subsequent cloud for-Illation
buil t on both sides arou!!(t and near the original line then organized
qu~,ckly into parallel lhles oriented NE~SW. The lin€,s of cells
eventually merged into one l"I"ge one having numerous cells within it,
lMny of whioh were capable of producing h"U.

Seeding was performed by all airplanes along' the line in Finney,
Haskell, Stevens and Seward counties ior effect in ~askell and Gray
countieS, initially. storm movements were to the northeast around 35 -
40 mph. ""'hilE! the multiple lines of cells were organizing into one
larger line, cloud base inflows were also reorganizing. Eventually,
one aircraft got positioned on the south side of the line and worked
on the most intense portion of it---although radar showed many
hail-bearing oells along the south side of the line where seeding
could be performed. Seeding on the south side of the line follOwed
. through Gray County and into eastern Ford County. Overall, some severe
storms became embedded wi thin the line and were uns.Dle to cant inue
being seeded properly. The two other aircraft, working on the north
side of the line, mD~tly in Gray County, followed more new storm
growth north and northeast into eastern Finney and southeastern Lane
<where one of our aircraft sighted a small tornado at 5;36 p.ro. I CDT,
6 west and 1 north of Dighton). the cloud top plane eventually was
able to get to cells near eastern Finney County and Lane County tor
some brief seeding. All seeding emded at .5:45 p.m. in eastern Ford
County. .

-~4,

Curtis D. Srott
Project Mana8Elr,
Western Kansas Weather Modification
