By 7: 04 p.lll. stonns had reach.ed
the southern portion of the target counties of Haskell and Stanton
and seeding was tenninated.

JULY 231'd--OPERATIONAL DAY #30: strong storms;; had begun developing
across NW tansas by 3:30 p.m., MDT., threatening Wallace, Wichita
and Greeley counties in the NW portion of the target area, All
aircraft Were launched. Seeding began in liE Wall1:oce County "t 3: 57
p.m., but shifted into two other il.l"eas of :storms: (1) over NW
Wichita County. and (2) NE Harnilton/NW Kearny/SW Wichita counties.

By 5: 20 p. m. radar showed three hail-pl"oducing storms in the
target area and at least three others capable of doing hail damage
moving toward the target area. The most destructive ~torm of the
day formed over NW Keal"ny/NE Hamilton counties and moved almost
direotly sDuth along th.. oounty line. Seeding pI'eferenoe shifted to
it when :1t was recognized that it was the \~L)rst one of all the
storms. It was suon seeded by two cloud base planes and the clOUd
top plane. The third base seeded worked in NE Wichita County.

Shortly after 6 p.m.. MDT. the plane working in Wichita County
went to NW Greeley COUIlty for possible seeding; however-, no inflows
were found as, most likely, the storm had become embedded in other
storms by n,e time it moved into NW Greeley and becom8 unseedable.
About the Game time, new inflows were found along a developing E-W
line of storms across Greeley Wichita and .scott counties. There
Was only the Slingle air-craft aVE<ilablel for seeding and Olle of its
wing generators had failed earlier. By 7:11 p.IO. the plane had to_
land for resupply.
By 6:48 p.m. t.he cluud top plane Was out of seeding agent and
it also had to land for resupply. This left only two cloud base
planEls available fOl' continu1.ng to seed this very sevel-a stOI"ID in
eastern Hami 1 tOll/western Kean'Y--.-an' insufficient number for its
size and intensity.

~y 7: 20 p, m. an E-W line of severe storms lay across the
t.arget area stretGhing from SW Greeley County e~st to Lane then
furth'll' east into Rush. At this saJUe time there were 5 hai1-
bearing storms across the northern t1.el" of counties with a
particular 1y str'ullg storm in NW Lan(e County that soon. moved SE
~crOS8 it. Alsu, the most severe storm (the Hamilton/Kearny one)
had reached NE Stal,ton/NW Grant counties, continuing to devastate
crops along th<? way. later movirl8 more southeasterly int(:O western
and south-central Grant County. Seeding was performed only a1tmg
the western bonndary of the storm that might affl!!ct Stanton County,
leaving the severe, hail-produoing storm in Grant unseeded. The two
rellle\ining seeding airoraft ended seeding at 8:05 p.m. and 8:08 p.m.

Berth the cloud top ar,d cloud bas", pI"''''", that ,..eload1.ng eal"liel"'
were airborne at 8:02 p.m. and 8:05 p.m., respectively, and began
