,

3.7 Computer System

A Data General mini-computer system is located
at the Operations Center. This system has the capability to
digitally record selected radar echo data. The system can
display the radar echo intensities on a CRT display unit which
also has provisions for construction of a paper copy of the
display. This on-site computer system also contains software
for rawinsonde analysis, convective cloud model computations,
and statistical analysis routines.

When seeding operations are in progress, PPI
and/or RHI scans of significant echoes will be routinely
recorded at 15 minute intervals. If the digital display is
inoperative, these 15 minute echo records will be made by direct
photography of the radar scope (PPI or RHI) using a 35mm
camera 0

308 Other Data Collection Equipment

Several other types of data collection equipment
will be utilized during the conduct of the program. This
equipment will be available to the project under an agreement
with the Kansas Water Resources Board, and operated by personnel
employed by the WKGMD #10 Data obtained with this equipment
will be retained for later analysis and evaluation.

A self-contained atmospheric sounding (Rawinsonde)
system will be used daily to obtain vertical profiles of tem-
perature, humidity, pressure, and wind for the purpose of
forecasting and/or verifying conditions suitable for cloud seed-
ing. These atmospheric soundings will normally be taken at
Lakin around noon MDT.

The primary seeding aircraft, and one other air-
craft based at the Lakin airport, will be equipped with sensors
and a recording system to display and record cloud physics
(liquid water and ice particle concentrations) and atmospheric
(e.go temperature and humidity) conditions during seeding or
reconnaissance missions. Whenever practicable, these data will
be used for real-time cloud seeding decisions.

A remote computer terminal will be located at the
Operations Center and used to routinely access data from the
EDN for use in forecasting and other daily oPerational decisions.

A number of portable weather stations will be in-
stalled at strategic locations in the primary target area to
record weather conditions such as rainfall, temperature, humi-
dity, and wind.
