"
.'.

8.0 OPEI0\TIO~AL PLAN

f
,
I
l
i'
,
,

a. Statement of the Nature and Objectives of Proposed Project

The general objective of the research is to more precisely document and

define natural and modified physical processes that occur in Rocky ~[ountain

orographic clouds. The research includes investigations over both primary

and secondary mountain barriers and their respective downwind valleys.

Some of the key critical questions related to weather modification

technology are to be emphasized by this esu research. The resolution of

these problems is important for further progress in appraising. the value of

weather modification, and for effectively and safely carrying out operational

programs by private and government weather modification groups. Specific
\J
problems being addressed in the CSU research program relate to the dispersion
"I -- - .
and transport of seeding materials, the detailed description of cloud

microphysical processes, and the ~ailability o~atmospheri~~edicto~s

(covariates) needed for analysis of future research and operational programs.

The proposed research builds on all past weather modification and cloud

physics research for winter orographic clouds in the Colorado Rockies.

The specific objectives of the proposed research program are:

To study the transport and diffusion of seeding materials in the

atmosphere.

To improve the understanding of cloud processes and changes which

result from cloud seeding.

To evaluate the specific changes in seeded clouds as compared with

non-seeded clouds.
