.,

County., Seeding began near the eastern border of Stevens at 6:32
p.m., unable to arrive prior to the hail-producing first entering
the county. Seeding continued on the Stevens storms until 6: 48
p.m., by which time the storm cluster had moved northeast out of
Stevens into Seward County, a non-target area county. The seeding
plane then flew to the Lakin area for seeding on a new N-S oriented
line of storms. It looks as if the old N-S surface trough had
continued drifting east with time such that by 6:41 p.m. storms
began forming and intensifying over its boundary'once more to form
a N-S line across eastern portions of Wichita, Kearny and Grant
counties. Seeding began just northeast of Lakin at 7:06 p.m.

Moving back in time a bit, the cloud top aircraft was moved
out Of the Wallace County'area at 6:25 p.m. and sent to "an isolated,
storm in, <.:entral Wichita County ,and,' Eventu".Dy t,.." wot.kthe newly
forming N-S line developing from Wichita County southward. After
flying one pass south along the line, the cloud top plane had to
land for fuel. At 6:48 p.m. one of the seeding planes had to land
for fuel and supplies---itwas airborne again at 7:58, p.m. and
seeding near Lakin at 8:15 p.m. -

By 7:30 p.m. the north-south line of storms on the surface
trough was strongest from Deerfield north along the FinneY/Kearny
county and Scott/Wichita county lines with a separately intense
area along the cold front in northern Wichita County and both areas
were being seeded. In the sector between the trailing edge of the
cold front, moving easterly from Western Kansas and converging with
the surface trough, new storms built quickly. Seeding was performed
by all available planes around the surface trough-formed storms,
however, two aircraft had to land for fuel and/or supplies; one at
7:38 p.m., the other at 7:49 p.m. One of the planes were able to
get airborne a second time, at 9:34 p.m. and CBgin seeding at 9:51
p.m. in southern Lane County.

By 9:50p.m. the storms generated along the cold front had
overtaken those generated around the surface trough forming a
massive, area",of thunderstorms,' and rainshowers in Scott County and
-portions of Kearny.,Finne:y; wic:hitaand 1.ane counties. When seeding
ended at ,9:05 p.m, three of the aircraft were working in Lane
County and one had been working in eastern Kearny/western ,Finney.

~ s~:~

program Manager,
Western Kansas Weather Modification
