L/

it passed through Wallace, Greeley, Wichita, Scott and Lane. At
first Wallace County bore the brunt of the most severe storms, but
as the line moved southerly the next badly hit counties appeared to
,be Wichita and Scott. By 2:19 a.m. the line had moved through most
of the northern part of the target area and was oriented into one
large "bow-echo" running from Kalvesta to Cimarron then west across
southern Finney-northern Haskell, southern Kearny-northern Grant
into southeast Hamil ton. However, planes began running out of
seeding agent at 1:46 a.m., losing one generator at a time, then
losing a second later. The first to run out of seeding agent was at
1:55 a.m., two othersat-::'2:25 and 2:32 a,m., respectively' The,
others were out by 2: 43 a'.m. at which time the line had pushed
through most of the target area with only a small portion of Ford
and Stevens counties not yet having the line pass through them.
Greeley, Hamilton and Stenton counties were unscathed', on this
operation. Although stevens County the line passed them, it appears
there was no severe weather associated with it.

AUGUST 2nd/3rd - OPERATIONAL DAYS #57/#58: By 5:30 in the afternoon
a single, large superce11 was seen moving southerly from Northwest
Kansas heading to Lane and Scott Counties. All cloud base planes
were moved to the Scott City base to get ready for a launch from
there. Other severe storms, lay in a NW-SE line from east of
Wakeeney into Nebraska, northeast of Goodland.

At 7: 02 p. m. all. planes were scrambled to the approaching
storm. All planes began seeding at 7:38 p.m. in Gave County and
followed the storm as it moved south-southwesterly toward Lane and
Scott counties.

As the cloud top plane was Climbing to seeding altitude past
southwestern Hodgeman County, en route to the storm approaching Lane
and Scott counties, new storms were seen beginning to build there.
Cloud top seeding was performed in northern Lane County at 8:23
p.m., continuing until 8:33 p.m" at which time it was sent back to
the Hodgeman area of storm development which had intensified
considerably in the interim. It began seeding around the large
cluster of storms in Hodgeman County at 8: 45 p.m. and continued
until 10:32 p.m. when fuel ran low and it had to land.

Cloud base seeding continued on the line of storms across
Scott, Lane ,and Finney counties until 9:52 p.m. at which time two
planes were sent to Ford County to seed the old Hodgeman storm
which had moved into extreme NW Ford County. By then the new cloud
growth between the old Hodgeman-Ford storm and the storm in Lane
County formed a nearly solid line oriented NW-SE across the most
eastern counties of the target area. The Hodgeman storm didn't
begin any serious movement into Ford County until around 9:31 p.m.
The other three planes came into eastern Finney-northern Gray for
seeding at 10:28 p.m. working along a bow echo moving quickly to
the south. One plane ran out of seeding agent at 11: 02 p,m.
During this general periOd, other unseeded storms had developed in
south-central Ford county, west of Bucklin, which passed southeast
out of the Ford County part of the target area.
