,-

.3

planes as it moved southeast across southwestern Greeley into
extreme north-central Hamilton where all seeding ended at 6;42 a.m.
By the time it had moved further southeast over Kendall, it was
non-threatening. The cloud top plane had been launched but the
flight was terminated before reaching seeding altitude.

In late afternoon, near peak heating time, a small NW-SE
oriented line of storms had formed in Morton County and was moving
northeasterly toward Stanton County, All planes were scrambled
between 6:00 and 6;05 p.m. Seeding was begun by one plane near the
southwestern, ,corner. of Stanton County ,at 6: 29 P ~ m., however , it
seeded only until--6:40 p.m. before the storm died and thefliqht
ended. Most other planes enroute landed in Johnson to standby tor
what appeared to be more storms moving into the target area later.

However, at the same time there was an isolated storm building
in northeast Gove County and another just east of Wallace County in
west-central Logan. One plane was diverted to the Wallace storm at
6:40 p.m. and began seeding new growth at 7:09 p.m, as it built
westward into eastern Wallace. At 7:15 two more cloud base planes
were sent to help seed the storm building toward eastern wallace.
Also, a cloud base plane and the cloud top plane were sent to a
vigorously building storm in Gove which showed characteristics of
an incipient supercell which and expected to move south toward
SCOtt and Lane counties. The last plane had seeded earlier then
refueled and resupplied before flying to Gave county at 7:40 p.m.

Two more planes began seeding in southeast Wallace at 7:33 and
7:40 p.m., respectively. Both the Wallace and Gove storms moved
south-southeasterly with the Wallace storm moving into northwest
WiChita and the Gove storm into northeastern Lane. The Gove storm
began to be seeded below cloud base upwind of it at 7; 51 p.m.,
whereas, cloud top seeding started at 8:09 p.m. A second cloud
base plane started seeding in Gove at 8:20 p.m. therefore splitting
our aircraft force with three planes on each storm (Wichita and
Gove). The cloud top plane was sent to help work on the Wichita
storm at 9:,09 p. m. as the stqrm being ,seeded became smaller in size
and having 'less:new" growth activity.' The cloud" top, plane began
seeding around the Wichita storm at 9;33 p.m. and continued until
10;18 p.m. when it had to return for fuel.

One of the planes seeding the Lane storm ran out of seeding
agent at 9:40 p.m. then around 10:02 p.m. both cloud systems "died"
which allowed all planes to return to bases for fuel and supplies,
By 9;40 p.m. an extensive WNW-ESE line of severe storms lay across
northwestern Kansas stretching the length of the target area, but
just north of the northern tier of counties.

At 10:30 p.m. two planes were scrambled to that part of the
extensive line nearest northern Wallace County. The other planes
were scrambled at 10:48 p.m. to seed in Logan County for another
part of the line of severe storms moving south to...ard northern
Scott County. Seeding continued by all cloud base planes as the
line pushed southerly. Severe storms were seeded along the line as
