City Airport, Inagalls and Cimarron. Four planes were scrambled,
Seeding began at 11:27 p.m. near Garden City. Seeding continued on
it northeast into eastern Finney County, before ending at 11:59 p.m.
A second plane was seeding southeast of Ingalls at 11:40 p.m. and
,continued on it until 11:47 p,m., ending in northeast Gray County.
One flight, not seeding, was ended at 11:37 p.m. due to generally
low radar intensities; another at 11: 57 p.m. The two seeding
flights were ended at 11:59 p.m. and 12:05 a.m., respectively.

JULY 12th - OPERATIONAL DAY #41: Shortly before 4 a.m. an isolated
severe thunderstorm formed in southeast Scott County. Southeasterly
low-level winds and a strong inversion trapped moisture in a very
shallow layer causing low cloud ceilings and visibilities to form
which kept planes from flying. The Scott County storm moved'into
northern Finney and collapsed by 4:45 a.m. Around 9 a.m. another
severe storm built near Coolidge but it collapsed by 9:35 a.m.
Again, c~oud bases were too low to launch aircraft.

Later, at 6:35 p.m, a large area of storms in Colorado had
fo,rmed behind the cold frontal system which l"~',.~rl t1:t.. ::eg5o!'. in t.he
morning earlier. Upslope winds were. becoming increas~ngly we~l-
developed. The area of storms was or~ented NE-5W with ~ts lead~ng
edge northwest of Wallace County. Three cloud base planes and the
cloud top ,plane were initially scrambled. However, the cloud top
plane was unable to work again due to radar failure.

Seeding began in NW Wallace County at 7~22 p.m, Fortunately,
the severe storm remained west of Wallace and, inexplicably, moved
southward parallel to the state line, although other storms north
of it moved northeast. As the area of storms neared Kansas, it
became oriented into a more well-defined, broad line oriented NE-
SW. Two of the planes diverted from Wallace County toward Hamilton
and Stanton counties anticipating those areas soon would be the
focus of seeding. One plane remained patrolling the storm near
Wallace County but moved southward at 8:06 p.m. to assist possible
seeding around, Hamilton and Stanton counties.

The two remaining cloud base planes, were scrambled at 8110
p.m. Two planes began seeding for hail in southwest Stanton County
at 8:35 p.m., two more in northwest Stanton at 8:38 and 8:40 p.m.,
respectively. The last plane began in Stanton at 9:15 p.m. At that
time seeding tracks were north-south across both Morton and Stanton
, c,?untieeL .One plane had t.o land for fuel at 9~30 p,m. As the large
l~ne moved eastward into Kansas, severe storm intensities within it
Degan to disappear. The other four ended seeding and returned to
their bases at 9: 37, 9: 52 and 10: 10 p.m. The last plane ended
seeding at 10:16 p.m. then flew northward where it appeared new
severe storms were developing along an E-W oriented line north of
Wallace County. Two other planes were scrambled at 10:27 p.m.. Four
base seeders eventually worked east-west across northern Wallace
the first at 10:54 p.m., others at 10:57, 10:59 and 11:10 p.m.'
respectively. Radar intensities remained low and seeding ended at
11:17 p.m.---updrafts also were significantly lower. After brief
patrolling, ,all flights were terminated.

~"c., ;(fl. ~~

Curtis D. Smith
Program Manager,
ret_ _ ~_ _. --
