placed on standby. A second plane was scrambled to Ford County at
4:12 p.m. and the cloud top plane at 4:17 p.m. The last three
cloud base planes were scrambled at 4:31 p.m. as curnuliform clouds
generally increased near Sharon Springs and Haskell/Grant counties.

The first cloud base plane began seeding in southeastern Ford
County at 4:42 p.m" the cloud top plane began at 4:53 p.m. and the
second and third cloud base planes at 5: 03 p.m. and 5: 13 p.m.,
respectively. Seeding continued at cloud top until 5:14 p.m. when
it was sent to the cluster of developing clouds over southeastern
Grant and southwestern Haskell counties, seeding there from 5: 40 to
5:52 p.m. Seeding ended at cloud base in Ford County at 5:17 and
5:45 p.m. as the storm moved out of the county. The storms near
Sharon Springs and Haskell County did not materialize into anything
significant. All planes returned to their bases between 5:42 and
6:02 p.m.

JUNE 21st/JUNE 22nd -OPERATIONAL DAYS t2~/#29: A surface trough
lay NE-SW across eastern Colorado and Western Kansas this day 1
storms began forming along it and moved toward Kansas, nearest the
target area around Wallace County. Two base seeder planes were
scrambled at 5:20 p.m., two more at 5:27 p.m. and the last at 5:32
p.m. The cloud top plane was scrambled at 5:38 p.m. Seeding began
in wallace County at 5:58 p.m., next at 6 p.m, and two more at 6:09
p.m. The leading edge of the line was followed across Wallace,
eventually working down into Greeley County where the cloud top
plane began seeding at 7:08 p.m. A bow-echo formation was evident
at 7:11 p.m. pushing easterly across eastern Wallace County out of
the target area. As a result, planes were moved progressively
southward along the line into Hamilton and Stanton counties.
Seeding continued across wichita, Kearny and Grant counties and, as
the line moved further easterly, a detached cluster of storms
developed over Grant County and was seeded: however, a separate
cluster of storms in southwest Ford County could not be worked.

One cloud base plane ran out of seeding agent at 9 p.m" the
cloud top plane was next at 9: 0 2 p. m., then the others at 9: 33,
9:39, 9:45 and 9:58 p.m" having used flares until they were also
exhausted. The planes were airborne again at 9:58, 11:33, 11:42
p.m. and 12:16 a.m. One plane had to divert from landing at
Johnson to Hugoton---numerous cO!l'.rnercial power "blackouts" around
much of Southwest and Western Kansas cut power to many area
airfie'lds including Johnson. This last plane eventually was
,airborne again at 3:15 a,m. and able to seed beginning at 3:28 a.m.

As the, evening progressed into morning, it appeared a cold
front had slipped into western Kansas and was oriented NE-SW. New
severe storms built, and moved, along this frontal bound?ry from
southeast Colorado northeast through Stanton, Hamil ton, Kearny,
Greeley, Wichita, northwest Finney, Scott and Lane counties.
Seeding continued along this boundary by 3 to 4 aircraft until 5:07
a.m. at which time all seeding ended.

~~ {1~

Program Manager,
Western Kansas Weather Modification
