The 700-mb
temperature was about -7 C. Several inches of snow fell in most areas, with up to OS' of water
equi\'alent.

A strong stoml system centered near Arizona brought snow into portions of west and
southwest Colorado on February 21 (litIS). Some seeding was conducted during the afternoon
and evening under southwest flow aloft. Snowfall was substantial in some areas. with portions
of the target area receiving as much as 1" of water equivalent. Smaller lotals accumulated in
most areas. with generally about 0.25 - 0.50" in the main northern portion of the target area.

Another strong stann system (#16) moved into the Four Comers states on February 27-
28. bringing heavy snow to portions of Colorado. The San Juan mountains of southwest
Colorado were hardest hit. with several feet of snow accumulation containing up to 3"+ of water
content occurring there. Southern portions of the Gunnison Basin benefited at least somewhat
from this stonn event. while northern portions of the basin received little snow accumulation.
Cloud seeding began on the evening of February 27. using sites appropriate for southerly flow
aloft. Most seeding ended around midday on February 28.

:\Iarch 200~

~1arch was an abnornlally wann and dry month in Colorado. with significant mountain
snowmelt and runoff beginning around the middle of the month. High pressure dominated the
weather pattern. bringing record waml weather during the middle and latter parts of March.
Figure 3.4 is a plot of the maximum and minimum temperatures. along with nonnal values. for
the ='RCS site at Butte. near the center of the target at an elevation of 10. 160'. This temperature
plot for the ~arch I-April 15 period shows these wann temperatures. with many days exceeding
500 F during this period. a rare occurrence for such an extended period of time this early in the
season. Only about one-third of the nonnal March precipitation fell in the Gunnison Basin.
Figure 3.5 is a plot similar to 3.4. but for precipitation at Butte instead of temperature.
