3.4 Seeding Material

Both the pyrotechnic devices and the acetone
burners will utilize a silver iodide - ammonium iodate complex.
The silver iodide materials have been checked for ice nuclei
yield in fue Colorado State University cloud simulation chamber.
Nuclei yield rates obtained from these tests will be used in
making seeding concentration calculations,

3.5 Communications

Ground to air communications will be accomplished
using FM frequency 155.10 MHz. A base station will be at the
Operations center, with each aircraft having a dedicated trans-
ceiver. A VHF transceiver will also be located at the Operations
Center. Aircraft will transmit on VHF multicom frequency when
above the altitude authorized for transmitting on the FM fre-
quency.

A commercial telephone will be installed at the
Operations Center for use in alerting aircrews, accessing the
Garden City NWS radar repeater link, the U.S. Water and Power
Resources Service's Environmental Data Network (EON), and for
general administrative use. A drop on this same telephone
circuit will be located in the Project Director's quarters,

3.6 Weather Radar

Storm monitoring and seeding control will be with
a C-Band radar located at the Lakin Operations Center. The
radar unit has PPI and RHI scopes with digital recording and
reply capability. The unit has an L-band aircraft transponder
interrogator for use in tracking seeder aircraft. Aircraft
beacon signals can be displayed on the radar PPI scope to per-
mit plotting of seeder aircraft position relative to the echo
area.

Broad scale radar coverage will be obtained from
the National weather Service WSR-57 radar at Garden City or
Limon. Readout from these NWS radar will be obtained as needed
using a telefacsimile repeater unit installed in the
Operations Center.
