3.0 EQUIPMENT & FACILITIES

3.1 Operations Center

operations and control activities will be consoli-
dated in the project building at Lakin Airport. This building
will accomodate the weather radar and communications facilities,
as well as weather analysis and pr;oj'ect administrative functions.
As such, it will be the principal operating location for the
Project Director.

3.2 Seeder Aircraft

One twin engine aircraft will serve as the direct in-
jection (on-top) seeder aircraft from April 15 to September 15,
1986. This aircraft will be equipped with a full complement of
avionics and weather avoidance radar for night time IFR flights.
It will be located at the Dodge city Airport.

Three other aircraft will be used for updraft (cloud-
base) seeding. These aircraft are currently owned and main-
tained by the WKGMD #1.

The updraft aircraft and aircrews will be located at
Scott City, Lakin, and Ulysses.

All seeder aircraft will be on "restricted" status
and will be certified airworthy under appropriate FAA regu-
lations.

3.3 Seeding Devices

The contractor will equip the direct injection seeding
aircraft with two dry ice dispensers. Each dispenser will be
preset to dispense 20mm size dry ice pellets at the rate of one
or two lbs. per minute.

The updraft (cloud base) seeding aircraft will be
equipped with wing mounted silver iodide generators arid wing
racks for end-burning pyrotechnics.

The generators will be the Carley type acetone burners.
Each aircraft will have two generators, one on each wing tip.
Each unit will dispense a 3 per cent silver iodide solution at
a rate of .126 liters per minute.

The end-burning pyrotechnics will be of the "TI'IIST-
LOC" variety for ease and speed of changing. The aircraft will
carry 12 pyrotechnic devices in the racks on each wing; 24 in
all. The racks will be mounted on the trailing edge of each
wing. Two kinds of pyrotechnics will be used: (1) a 20gm device
that burns in approximately 6 minutes, and (2) a 75gm device
that burns in approximately 3 minutes. Nuclei Engineering, Inc.
is the manufacturer.
