San Juan/Dolores Basin
The SWSI value 1.5 indicates that April water basin supplies were above nonnal. The May 1
snowpack is 135% of normal. Flow at the gaging station at Animas River near Durango was 1,620
cfs, as compared to the long-term average of 771 cfs, Streamflows were flowing well above 150%
of nonnal at the end of April. Storage in McPhee, Vallecito, and Lemon reservoir totaled 102% of
nonnal at the end of April.

Jack Bvers, Deputv State Engineer, DNR, W A TF Vice Chair
Mr. Byers summed up the meeting by saying Colorado is an arid, semi-arid state with average or
above average snowpack, and stated that this is not the end of the drought. He also commented that
Sunday, May 15th through Thursday, May 19th there might be high streamflows from the snowmelt.
Mr. Byers explained the recent high temperatures could result in potential flooding, but then it will
taper off with less severe runoff, He also said the short melt out period is better than a long melt out
period, because it causes controlled runoff. Mr. Byers stated we could have had a short-tenn
drought, but it could also start up again next month, or in six months, or six years,

Mr. Byers mentioned the water supply is good throughout the state, and we should remember water
conservation and improved storage as good water management that could help us at anytime, He
commented that Boulder is on their second year without water restrictions and Denver is on
voluntary restrictions this year which shows a result of good water management. Mr. Byers also
mentioned that if we begin to have dry conditions again, it could increase the fire danger; and we
could have a bad fire season this year.

Next Meeting

The next meeting will be ajoint Flood and Drought Meeting on June 8 at 1:00 here at the Division
of Wildlife Headquarters, (Because it is a joint meeting there will be some variations on the
agenda, )

The meeting was adjourned at 3:00 p,m,

-- Visual Presentations from the meeting can be seen on the CWCS Webpage, the
Conservation and Drought Planning Section, Colorado Drought Information at:

http://cwcb.state.co.us/owclDrought_Planning/Presentations/htm.
