I
I
I

Additional actions might include:

update technical guides to include data on cost effective-
ness and energy use impact of conservation practices
designed for protection of the resource base.

I

provide training to make full use of Universal Soil Loss
Equation (USLE) and Wind Erosion Equation (WEQ) to insure
that all field offices can effectively use technology in
planning effective cons, :vation treatment to reduce erosion
rates.

I

I

develop and utilize simple programs for hand-held program-
mable computers for making USLE and WEQ computations and
determining cost effectiveness and energy use. Update
technical guides accordingly.

I

quantifying soil savings by use of the Universal Soil Loss
Equation (USLE) and Wind Erosion Equation (WEQ) before and
after application of conservation practices.

I

evaluate established "T" levels for various soils to make
sure they are correct. If the acceptable value for "T" is
set too high, there could still be a problem with depleting
the resource.

I

I

work closely with Colorado State University, Extension
Service, and Agricultural Research Service to perfect new
conservation tillage practices.

I

accelerate intensive agronomic training to field office
staffs on crop growth characteristics, use of chemicals,
safety, weed identification, and the potential for using
alternate crops in rotation to afford better wind
protection.

I

I

set up field demonstration plots to promote conservation
tillage.

I

set up field demonstrations on the latest conservation
tillage equipment.

I

promote incentive payments to demonstrate value of conser-
vation tillage through the Great Plains Conservation
Program, and with the assistance of Soil Conservation
Districts and ASCS, through the Agricultural Conservation
Program.

I

through Soil Conservation Districts, encourage use of only
those government programs that encourage farming on land
where the soil loss tolerance levels can be achieved.

I

I

III-9

I
