<br />Pav.'T1ee Creek drains an area of 645 square miles in Logan County and is tributary to the South Plane
<br />River southwest of the City of Sterling. The overflows from floods on Pavmee Creek flooded the
<br />community in 1935, ) 965. and 1997. The city's business sector was completely inundated dunng the July
<br />30.3 J. 1997 flood event. Approximately 1,400 homes and the entire business district in the southern half
<br />of the community are in the lOa-year floodplain from Pa"'nee Creek overflows. ICON Engineering, Inc.
<br />of Denver completed a reconnaissance level study in June 1997. The proposed project consists of levees,
<br />improved channel hydraulic conveyance systems, bridge modifications, and floodwalls designed to
<br />provide 100-year flood protection. The project plan is under review to evaluate the flood characteristics
<br />from a flood of the same magnitude as the 1997 flood. The total cost of the project is estimated at
<br />$4,040,000. Fundmg sources include the ciry's capital improvement fund ($750,000), a FEMA hazard
<br />mitigation grant ($1,165,000), Logan County in kind services ($150,000), the Union Pacific Railroad
<br />(5375,000), Colorado Department of Transportation ($550,000), CWCB Construction Fund in 1998
<br />(5550,000). and CWCS Construction Fund in 1999 if needed (5500,000).
