<br />COLORADO WATER CONSERVATION BOARD <br />102 Columbine Building <br />1845 Sherman Street <br />Denver, Colorado 80203 <br /> <br />January 6, 1976 <br /> <br />DELTA PROJECT <br /> <br />INTRODUCTION <br /> <br />The city of Delta is located in west-central Colorado and is the <br />county seat of Delta County. The 1970 federal census reports a total <br />population of 3,694 persons residing within the city limits. However, <br />the municipal water system serves a total population of about 6,000 <br />persons since rural areas adjacent to the city are supplied with water <br />through the municipal system. The total water service area is estimated <br />to contain about 8,400 people by 1990" <br />While irrigated agriculture has always been and probably will <br />continue to be the major industry of Delta County, coal production has <br />long been a major enterprise within the county. Tremendous coal reserves <br />exist in the northern part of the county and in the adjacent western <br />part of Gunnison County. Various major coal producing companies have <br />already acquired or are in the process of acquiring the ownership of or <br />leases on coal-bearing lands. It seems behond question that coal <br />production in the county will increase considerably in the coming years. <br />The impact of this increase in coal mining activity has already been <br />felt within the county. Virtually all municipalities in the area are <br />experiencing problems with their water distribution and treatment <br />systems, although raw water supplies are adequate. <br /> <br />PROBLEM <br /> <br />The raw water supply of the city of Delta appears to be adequate <br /> <br />for at least the next fifteen years.
