Statewide Water Supply Investigation - Study Underway With Results Due in the
Fall of N ext Year

The statewide water supply investigation is expected to be completed in about a year.
The results of that investigation can be helpful to local communities and the State of Colorado in
identifying additional action required to address Colorado's water supply issues, The statewide
water supply investigation should examine water supply opportunities in each basin that identify:

)> Water conservation and efficiency measures;

)> Existing dams and reservoirs in need of repair and capable of additional water storage
if they are repaired;

)> Existing reservoirs that can be enlarged for additional storage;

)> New water supply projects; and

)> New cooperative arrangements between municipal water providers and agriculture
such as interruptible supply contracts.

The state is investing a significant amount of money in the statewide water supply
investigation, The inventories and water supply alternatives should be completed by next Fall,
2004, Those alternatives should then be evaluated to determine how best to help support specific
projects,

III. Basin of Origin Protection

Over the last several decades, it has become apparent that water development
opportunities in Colorado cannot oocur unless there is protection for the basins from where the
water is taken, That protection must provide appropriate economic and environmental mitigation
so that water projects can be built without the acrimonious water wars of the past.

" .t, .:

.;

" .,._\:." ,~_1 '

.lG- ;,,-i;~.t,,- .~_,.;i
