.

COLORADO WATER CONSERVATION BOARD
721 State Centennial Building
1313 Sherman Street
Denver, Colorado 80203

January 15, 1985

SAN MIGUEL WATER CONSERVANCY DISTRICT PROJECT -- PHASE 1
(LON~ CONE RESERVOIR ENLARGEMENT)

SAN MIGUEL WATER CONSERVANCY DISTRICT

Introduction

'l'he Lone Cone Reservoir is located in San Miguel County
about 10 miles south of Norwood. The reservoir is owned and
operated by the Lone Cone Ditch and Reservoir Company. However,
the sponsor of the proposed reservoir enlargement is the San
Miguel Water Conservancy District.

.

The reservoir, which has a capacity of 1800 acre-feet, is
operated in conjunction with the Lone Cone Ditch to serve
irrigated lands in the Norwood and Redvale area. Lone Cone
Reservoir has decreed water rights on Naturita Creek to the extent
of 2940 acre-feet. All of these water rights are absolute, except
for 675 acre-feet.

Enlargement of the Lone Cone Reservoir is the first phase of
a larger project being proposed by the San Miguel Water
Conservancy District. The overall San Miguel Water Conservancy
oistrict project would entail major enlargements and improvements
to three other irrigation systems in the Norwood and Naturita
areas. 'rhe Board is recommending that these subsequent phases
also be authorized for construction at this time. They are
pre sented separa tely in the project summary en ti tIed "San Miguel
.va ter Conservancy Di strict project -- Pha se 2."

Problem

The existing Lone Cone Reservoir serves about 5000 acres of
farm land in the Norwood-Redvale areas. These irrigated lands
need supplemental, late season irrigation water.

Feasibility Study

.

In January, 1984, the San Miguel Water Conservancy District
applied to the Board for financial assistance to enlarge Cone
Reservoir. The Board sUbsequently authorized 50 percent funding
for a feasibility study on the proposed project. The study has
now been completed by Western Engineers, Inc., a Grand Junction
consulting engineering firm, and is the basis of the
recommendations on the project.

721
In/cn
