<br />-10,. <br /> <br />Opening Statement by Chairman Lory <br /> <br />As chairman of Governor Thorntonls .Committee for planning <br />the celebration of the Centennial of Irrigation in Colorado, I <br />have the honor. of calling the meeting to order and giving you a <br />brief outline of the plans of the Committee.' ' <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />These include four sessions in cooperation with the Irrigar <br />tion Institute of Colorado Agricultural and Nechanical College' <br />and a banc;uet vlednesday evening here in Alamosa where the splendid <br />facilities of Adams State College were offered the Committee by <br />President N. William Newsom; an all-day meeting in San Luis <br />Thur~day, April 10, where as guests of the citizens of the oldest <br />town in Colorado you will take part in a parade, the dedication of <br />the monument on the bank of the San Luis Peoples Ditch, a program. <br />at the San Luis Branch of Adams State College and motorcade through <br />the beautiful Culebra Valley. Chair!llan. A.J.Hamman of the Exten- <br />sion Service, Colorado Agricultural and. Mechanical College, and his <br />Program Committee have prepared a program which assures your <br />attendance at every.session~ and he and Luther Ilean, local member <br />of the Committee 'on Arrangements have everything in readiness for <br />our meeting. <br /> <br />The General Committee limited the Institute programs to <br />2-hour sessions each forenoon and afternoon and ruled out eVening <br />sessions, so you have ample time for visiting,. reminiscing and <br />planning. <br /> <br />Outstanding leaders in irrigation will preside as' chairmen <br />of the four Institute sessions. <br /> <br />The Hags of the nations governing the region where irriga- <br />tion began'one hundred years ago in Colorado--Spain, Mexico, and <br />The United States--and the Colorado State flag, are loaned by the <br />Historical Society of Colorado. <br /> <br />Since the 1rrigation Centennial Celebration is held during <br />Holy vleek, and in growing crops under irrigation ,There natural <br />rainfall is supplemented with. water supplied through human effort, <br />the irrigation farmer is really cooperating with the Lord, there- <br />fore, in reverence and thanksgiving, all sessions of the celebra- <br />tion will be opened with prayer. <br /> <br />I now have the pleasure of introducing the Chairman of this <br />session, the son of a pioneer family in the San LUieValley,<an <br />alumnus of Colorado Agricultural and Mechanical COllege, and <br />Deputy State Engineer, Dave Mathias of Monte Vista. <br /> <br /> <br />',), ' <br /> <br />..., <br />
