.

.

.

.

9/30/82
eWCB

Potential Projects

Bear Reservoir

The Upper Yampa Water Conservancy District is the entity
propos ing the cons truct ion of Bear Reservo i r, wh ich is to be
located on the Yampa river, approximately 18 miles south of
Steamboat Springs. The District has already contracted with
Colorado-Ute Electric Association to do a feasibility study of
the project at an approximate cost of $30,000. The study, which
is expected to follow CWCB guidelines, should be ready sometime
in October.

The total reservoir capacity of the proposed project would
be 33,000 AF out of which about 30,000 AF would be active storage
and about 3,000 AF dead storage to be used as a minimum pool for
recreational purposes. The total project cost is expected to be
about $12,000,000.

Broomfield Great Western Reservoir

The City of Broomfield has been advised by the State
Engineer's Office that the spillway on its Great Western Dam
needs to be enlarged in order to be in compliance with the
National Dam Safety Act. The City has retained Hydro-Triad Ltd.
to prepare a feasibility study on this project.

preliminary information from the engineer and city
representative is that this project will only be feasible if the
raw water storage capacity is increased in conjunction with
enlarging the spillway. The anticipated plan is to raise the
existing dam by about 27 feet and increase the reservoir capacity
of 3,600 acre-feet to 9,100 acre-feet. The estimated cost of
this project is about 4 million dollars.

Buckeye Reservoir

The Buckeye Reservoir repairs and rehabilitation were
authorized and funded to the extent of $100,000 in S.B. 439 (1981
Session). The damsite is located in the extreme western portion
of Montrose County and is in the Manti-La Sa1 National Forest.
The project provides for improvements of outlet works, increase
of spillway capacity and dam embankment repairs. It is included
in the State Engineer's list of dams requiring rehabilitation.

In order to establish design paramaters and also investigate
the general condition of the structure, the soils engineering
firm of Lincoln DeVore was asked to carry out a subsurface
investigation and stability analysis of the embankment.
