<br />In researching past flood events, it has been found that the severity of flooding is directly related to the
<br />level and intensity of the available moisture and other atmospheric conditions, The causes of floods relate
<br />directly to the accumulation of rainfall runoff, rapid snowmelt, the failure of man-made structures, such as
<br />dams and levees, or a combination of any of these events. The following table entitled "Major Floods in
<br />Colorado' presents the date, stream or location of the flood; the type of event; the number of deaths it
<br />caused; and the damage totals in 1998 dollars. The acronyms for the types of events are detailed below:
