The following table entitled "Major Floods in
Colorado' presents the date, stream or location of the flood; the type of event; the number of deaths it
caused; and the damage totals in 1998 dollars. The acronyms for the types of events are detailed below:
. General Rain Floods (GR)
. Thunderstorm Floods (TS)
. Snowmelt Floods (SM)
. Rain or Snow Floods (RS)
. Ice Jam Floods (IJ)
· Dam/Levee Failure Floods (OF)

Table II - 1 - Major Floods In Colorado

- iii-

Major Stream or Location

Damages (in 1998 $)

May 1864 Cherry Creek al Oenllel'
JlJy , B96 Bear Creek at M:>rrison
Oct. 1911 San Juan River near Pa~sa Springs
JlJy 1912 Cherry Creek al Denver
JLrl91921 Arkansas River at Pueblo

TS ? 6,000.000
TS 27 8,000,000
GR 2 6,000,000
T5 2 120,000,000
T5 78 760,000,000
TS 18 52,000,000
TS 9 15,000,000
AS ? 8,500,000
GR 2 36,000,000
SM ? 18,000,000
TS 8 2,200,000,000
T5 16 205,480,000
RS 0 21 ,500,000
GR 0 13,200,000
RS 10 388,800.000
TS 144 85,200,000
DF 3 49,080,000
AS 10 26,250,000
5M 2 46,500,000
5M 0 2,140,000
SM 21 51,266,000
TS 6 219,367,000
352 $4,436,577,000

May 1935 f..t>rnment Creek at Cobraoo Springs
May 1935 Kiowa Creek near Kiowa
May 1942 South Platte River Basin
May 1955 PlJ"gatorie River at Trndad
JlJ191957 Western Colorado

JlJ"'l9 1 965 South Platte River at Denver

June 1965 Aritansas River Basin
M3y 1969 Sooth Platte River Basin
Sept. 1970 Southwest Colorado
May 1973 South Platte River at Denver
JlJy 1976 Big Thompson River in Can~n
JlJy 1982 Fal River at Estes Park
J1Il9 1 983 Nonh Central Colllties

May-..k.me Western & Nathwestern COU1ties
1984

May-..i.m9 Western SIqJ9
1993

Jm91995 Western Slopeard South Platte River
Juy 1997 A.
