"

GRANT APPLICATION - PART 2

1. Provide a summary description of your proposed project. Be
sure to provide a description of; the need for your project,
how you would implement your project, and the participants in
your project.

The Bayfield School District has apprOXimately 12 acres of
land upon which they have built a school, some roads, and a.
parking area, leaving approximately 8 acres of land on which they
wish to put a soccer field. a ball field which will be irrigated,
and an outdoor lab and xeriscape landscaping which will be drip
irrigated. The school grounds will be used as a community
facility and experience heavy use. The school district wishes to
manage the land to meet the needs of the community, while also
demonstrating the benefits and alternatives available wIth proper
irrigation and xeriscape landscaping.

The school has avai labi lity of irrigation water sufficient to
meet their irrigation needs on this land if proper irrigation and
conservation measures are implemented. The school wishes to use
timers and soi I sensors on the above ground irrigation system for V
the bal I field and soccer field and a drip irrigation system for
the landscape plantings and outdoor lab plantings. The school
administration feels the need to be a leader in the community
regarding the education of the students and community members
with respect to water conservation.

Participants in this project include the Bayfield School
District, the Bayfield Elementary School Beautification
Committee. and the residents of Bayfield and surrounding
area who will use the facilities.

Xeriscaping - Bayfield Elementary School

Why Xeriscape?

Xeriscaping is rapidly increasing. To answer the question, "Why
Xeriscape?", perhaps one should first ask "Why plant conventional.
turf and flower garden areas?". Why fight undesirable weeds in
areas that are not in turf?

Large areas of uniformly dark green and well manicured lawns
quickly lose their appeal when their true costs are evaluated:

1. High irrigation water requirements.

2. Very large labor inputs for ferti I izing, mowing, herbicide
appl ication, mowing, disposal of lawn clippings, and more mowing.

3. High initial expense for sprinkler system and then high
maintenance costs, both in terms of dollars and labor.

1
