Committee was an outdoor lab where the students can learn
different ecosystems and environments along with different plants
and their names.

Southwestern Colorado, with its approximately 10 inches annual
rainfal I, is a harsh environment for heavy use areas such as ball
fields and isolated specimen plantings needed for outdoor lab and
landscaping. The proposed planting and irrigation system would
meet the needs of the community for years to come.

4. Please identify any community involvement anticipated or
planned as part of your project.

The community of Bayfield wi I I be involved in this project
by contributing many hours of volunteer labor to instal I the
irrigation system and make the plantings. There has been much
excitement regarding this project already with the community and
upon approval of this grant the work wil I begin under the
direction of the School Beautification Committee and school
administration.

5. How might you propose sharing the results of the project with
your community?

The results of this project will quickly be apparent to the
community through their use of the facilities. Additionally, the
school will present to the Bayfield area residents the layout and
arrangement of this project demonstratinbg the simplicity and J
efficiency of this project. This can be promoted throughout the
larger area, perhaps through an in depth article in a local
newspaper, radio and T.V. coverage, and public meetings.

6. Describe any innovative features of your project or
anticipated benefits to your agency and others.

Innovative features of this project include utilizing timers
and soil sensors for heavy use areas on the school grounds such
as ball fields and soccer fields along with timers and drip ~
irrigation system for specimen plantings and an outdoor lab. The
innovativeness of this project is in line with the mission of the
school to be a leader in promoting the education in conservation
of our resources. It is the school's position that the public
should do not only as the schools teach, but do as they do.

The anticipated benefIts will certaInly Include reduced
maIntenance of the grounds after the InItIal establIshment
period. reduced cost associated with this maintenance, reduced
manpower requirements. increased health and vigor of the
plantings, and increased pride in the facilIty by the area
residents along with increased confIdence of the publIc In theIr
school administration and system regarding their leadershIp in
the community, which includes addressing the specIal needs of our
handicapped and senior citizen segments.

8
