INTRODUCTION

"

PURPOSE OF STUDY

The Image of Denver Ia determined largely by the
view from it's freeways, Freeway design should
give major consideration to the visual experience
of thl! freeway travelers. The driving experience
through a freeway corridor should be made as
pleasing and relaxing as possible, Ideally, thla ex-
perience should provide the motorlat with a .feel-
Ing. of the character of the community and region,

Traditionally, urban traffic corridors are visually
confusing and distracting, In addition to the high
volumes of vehicular traffic the driver must con-
centrate on, he Ia also confronted with a variety of
highway structural element. ranging from bridges
and retaining walls to lighting and slgnage, These
elements become visual distractions when placed
In a random disorderly panern. Helping to reduce
these distractions can be accomplished by proper-
ly coordinating the different visual elements, such
as bridges and landscaping that are encountered
by the motorls\.

Today thousands of residents and visllors are
traveling on freeways In Denver. By the year 2000,
an esllmated 185,000 vehicles will travel dally on 1-
25 through the South Plane River Valley. The Colo-
rado Department of Highways and Clly of Denver
feel Ills Important to Improve the visual elements
along this seven mile segment of Interstate urban
freeway. A task force was established and meet-
Ings were held to provide direction for landscaping
associated with various highway construction pro-
Jects along 1-25 and to Identlly demonstration pro-
jects to fill in the gaps between on-going construc-
tion projects, (See Figure 1.) Because many
highway projects were ellher under construction or
soon to be under construcllon In the central 1-25
corrdor the opportunlly was present for CDOH and

1.
