1
I
I

6. DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM LEAK DETECTION
AND REPAIR

The Wheat Ridge Water District has
distribution system leak detection,
unaccounted for water loss. All three of
further below.

an active program for
repair/maintenance and
these areas are addressed

(A) LEAK DETECTION:

We are in the process of evaluating the various methods and
technologies of leak detection available in the water industry. As
soon as that decision is made we will implement a leak detection
schedule that will allow us to traverse our water line system every
2 years.

We currently utilize the "Leak Detection" department of the Denver
Water Department or that of an independent service as needed.

(B) REPAIR & MAINTENANCE:

Our program of regular meter maintenance has been very effective in
guaranteeing the accuracy of our customers water meters. In 1994,
the Board of Directors approved a three year program of system wide
replacement or retrofit of water meters to ensure the maximum
accuracy of water consumption.

, I

Regular water line repair and maintenance is critical to the
prevention of water loss through leakage. The Wheat Ridge Water
District has always been prudent in the repair and replacement of
older mains. In 1988 we aggressively addressed the replacement of
old Cast Iron mains. The district has replaced all 2, 3, and 4"
mains with new 6", 8" or 12" Ductile Iron Pipe (DIP) or 6",8" or
12" Poly Vinyl Chloride Pipe (PVC) as specified by the Denver Water
Department.

The -st;atis~ica~ breakdown~oI~wa~er-rines replacedoy--t1l:eUlsTrict
is as follows:

2" Main out of service 1,840 Lineal Feet As of 12/31/95
.J 3" " " " " 1,8421 " " "
I
4" " " " " 48,191 " II "
6" " II " " 19,148 " II II
8" II II II II 2.394 II " II
TOTAL II II II II 89,994 Lineal Feet As of 12/31/95
-10-
