"

Colorado's Western Slope tourism and headwater communities:

1. Plan and Design
2. Use Lawn Grass Alternatives
3. Grow "Unthirsty" Plants
4 . Improve the soil, using locally generated composting
material for better water retention, drainage, and
fertility
5. Irrigate wisely using an irrigation system designed and
adjusted formaximum water savings and watering only when
required
6. Use locally generated mulches to reduce watering and
maintenance needs
7. Maintain appropriately with proper care, fertilization,
weeding, and watering.

The project will be approximately 10,000 square feet adjacent
to the City's rodeo grounds and equestrian facilities. A
"western theme" will be developed in the planting, layout, and
playground equipment which will be compatible with the
adjacent facilities, appealing for park and playground users.

The project will be installed and maintained by the City Parks
and Recreation Department. Project monitoring will be
supervised by the City Public Works Department.

3. Public Information/Education proiect: Project staff is committed
to publicizing the impacts of both the Indoor Plumbing Retrofit and
Public Open Space Projects. Information will be evaluated and used
in:

1. Steamboat Springs Public Works Department public relations
program of proactive planning for implementation of a volume-
base rate structure to replace the current flat rate
structure. Program will be based on:

a. the NWCCOG project Indoor Plumbing Retrofit spreadsheet
as a hands-on planning tool available for residential and
commercial users; and

b. Publication of a "user-friendly" Guide to Water Efficient
Landscape in Colorado Mountain Communities , which will
provide information tailored for the Western Slope and
headwater communities. The guide will provide information
~ based on the seven xeriscape variables tested in the
project. We will produce approximately 3,000 copies of a
10-12 page handbook, in blaCk-and-white, with a budget of
$2,000. The guide will be distributed to individual
residential and commercial customers. '

r
I

The Guide will be available to other communities through their
local governments, public works departments, planning
departments, and parks and recreation departments;

- --- -~ -2-
