GRANT APPLICATION - PART 2

------------------------------------------------------------

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

1. Provide a summary description of your proposed project.
Be sure to provide a description of: need for your project,
how you would implement your project, and the participants
in your pro j ecl.

This proposed project involves the development of a
needed planning tool to assist resort communities in the
development of water conservation plans. For this tool to
be useful to the resort communities it requires the detailed
monitoring of water consumption in a relatively controlled
situation. It also requires enhancing our und-er~siandlng~oT
water use habits by nonresidents. Finally, it requires a
user-friendly mechanism to compare water management options
for the water provider and individual consumer. The project
has several related components. ~ese components relate to
the indoor plumbing and informatIon/education goals of the
project.
The first step involves developing a better
understanding of the indoor water use patterns in
residential and commercial sectors of resort communities.
Water efficient fixtures (toilets, shower heads, sink
aerators) would be retrofit in a number of housing and
lodging units. Water consumption in these units will be
compared to similar units without efficient water fixtures.
A survey would be utilized in combination with the actual
monitoring to better assess water use habits of the sampled
population.
The second step of this project would be the
development of a spreadsheet program to store information on
water consumption and allow comparison and evaluation of
different water efficiency options available to water
providers. The spreadsheet would include certain service
area specific information (similar to the WaterPlan model),
conservation measure financial data, and information on
alternate water efficiency devices. A simple user manual
would be developed to explain the use and interpretation of
the spreadsheet.
A separate planning spreadsheet would also be developed
to assist owners of individual units to evaluate the
benefits and costs of investing in water efficiency measures
for their unit. This comprehensive approach would allow
water providers in mountain resorts to evaluate system-wide
demand side management options. It would also furnish them
with a tool to work with their individual customers who are
looking for ways to reduce their indoor water consumption.
This comprehensive planning tool could provide, for example,
a means to both determine an appropriate billing rate and
provide assistance to a customer on how to reduce their
bi 11 .
