V. outcome

CUrrently, water planning in resort communities is done
by trial and error. Many of these communities are beginning
to recognize that they will soon be caught in the middle of
multiple competing uses for water resources. Some of these
communities have traditionally focussed the problem on out
of basin water diversions. The result is typically
heightened animosity and little water conservation. The
cost of this is picked up by the taxpayer. The proposed
project would help alleviate this situation. The project
would:

1. Improve the understanding of water use in resort
communities and how that compares with other areas of
the State.

2. Focus attention on the opportunities to manage
water demand in resorts and the improvements that will
have on optimal utilization of the State's water
resources.

3. Create a useful tool for resort area water
providers to analyze their own specific situations and
evaluate appropriate approaches to conserving water.

4. Reduce the pressure resulting from competing uses
of water.

5. Free up some demands on regional streams and
thereby make available its use for many of the
activities which attract individuals from across the
State and nation to visit the resort communities in the
Colorado Rocky Mountains.
