Secondly, customers need to realize and understand the history and value of water in
Colorado. A good understanding of the value of water in our region should give them a
greater appreciation for the difficulty and complexity of delivering water. In turn, we
- - - --- - - - - ---woUidexpec1 thiiffhTs understanCl1ngwowaleacno-vOfuntary-elforfsloconser\ieour - - - - -.
I water resources.

Conservation Measures

I
-1
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I

Major water accounts such as municipal irrigation and large commercial and industrial
uses are reviewed at least semi-annually.

Customer Classes

La Junta currently serves 2,886 customers; 2,176 customers are single-family, 86 are
multi-family, 481 are commercial, 31 are municipal and 29 industrial.

CONSERVATION MEASURES

Role of Water Use Efficiency

La Junta water customers do not necessarily need more water or even a continuance of
the water they use now. What they really need and want are the benefits or services
that water provides. They want to get clean hands or dishes or clothes, and to have a
beautiful yard and other amenities that water provides. Within reason, the customers
generally do not care whether they use more or less water as long as they get the
desired services with the quality and reliability they want. La Junta is committed to
meeting this demand for water services with less water used more efficiently.

A reduction in demand is easier and more economically beneficial to attain than
increasing supply-side options. The City focuses on economics and wants its customers
to understand that conservation equals lower water price increases to them without
reducing the benefits and services they expect. Energy, labor, and capital costs will
probably increase even without an increase in demand. However, these costs will
increase at a significantly lower rate and may be put off for a number of years if demand
does not increase as the City grows.

I

Water Efficient Fixtures and Apoliances

I
)
I
I

La Junta plans to adopt plumbing standards to require all new construction to install 1.6
gallon per flush water closets, 1 gallon per minute urinals, 2.5 gpm faucets and
showerheads, lavatory, kitchen and service faucets designed not to exceed a flow rate
of 2.2 gpm at 80 psi. All replacement plumbing will also meet this standard.

7
