. .

.

.

Sharing Results with community

county Staff would advertise the project and share project
results through the local media. Educational material would be
distributed to local groups, and groups and individuals would be
encouraged to observe the Lawson Hill projects. Species would be
identified at the bus turn-around site.

Benefits to community, San Miguel county and others

The project will benefit the community by providing xeriscaping
information specific to and appropriate for the Telluride Region.
The proposed projects are designed to be realistic for a
residential setting and will be designed with an emphasis on low
cost and low maintenance, as well as low water use. The
educational materials will provide estimated expenses and
locations where specific plants can be purchased. The results of
this project can be used by other high-elevation communities and
by government entities and Housing Authorities interested in
using xeriscape for their own buildings and housing units.

If this project demonstrates that high-elevation xeriscaping is a
viable water-conservation alternative to conventional landscaping
practices in the Telluride Region, the County will encourage
developers of new sUbdivisions to require in their subdivision
covenants xeriscaping with native vegetation. PUblic support for
xeriscaping could be the impetus for instituting county-wide
regulations requiring environmentally appropriate landscaping.

participants

San Miguel County Board of Commissioners, San Miguel County
Housing Authority, San Miguel County Planning Department, San
Miguel county Building and Environmental Health Departments, San
Miguel County Road and Bridge Department, Upper Colorado
Environmental Plant Center (Meeker, CO), local landscape designer
Elizabeth Gick, Lawson Hill Developer Telecam Inc., Telluride
Institute Program Director Linda Luther, USDA Soil Conservation
Service Resource Specialist Dean Stindt and local volunteers.

Completion Dates

Xeriscaping will begin Spring 1993 and be completed by Summer
1993. Educational material will be produced by Autumn 1993.
Monitoring will continue for at least three years

3
