Low-flow toilets, fancets and showerheads
will be installed in the residences to be metered. Business and public facilities will also be metered,

The district has purchased approximately $1,550 in water meters. The water meters bave been installed and bave been used to mea-
sure the water usage of ten users on a weekly basis. The district is still in the process of receiving commilIDent from its users to accept
and install the low flow fixtures. It appears that three of the ten users already bave their own water conservation devices. The devices
for the other users will be installed by year end of 1995. Data is presently being collected on the water usage.

Division of Wildlife

County: South Platte River Basin
Funding: $41,500
Start: 7/15/92
Status: Completed
The Colorado Division of Wildlife, using the South Platte River Watershed, produced a teacher training workshop to expand the scope
of the successful Rivers of Colorado Water Watch NelwOIk curriculum to address the historical and social issues of water use and the
role of conservation as a resource management tool, while also incorporating National Project Wet activities in the curriculum, The
expanded project I) provides the historical framework within which water use decisions bave been made in Colorado, 2) outlines the
legal and political systems which govern water use in the state, 3) encourages individual and community actions which would both
conserve water and insure water quality for the futnre, 4) promotes water conservation measures as an essential component of long-
range planning options to manage an over-appropriated resource and 5) develops skills to communicate effectively about water values
and water issues.

The South Platte curriculum has generated a lot of excitement. School report doubling and tripling emollment in courses about the
South Platte River. The curriculum has also received nationwide inquiry. The Colorado Science Initiative believes this prOgtlllIl is on
the cutting edge, providing real-life application for student learning.

Empire

County: Clear Creek
Fnnding: $8,300
Start: 1211/93
Status: On-going
The project goals included: increasing customer awareness of the effects of metering; reduction of overall water usage; and extending
the useful life of the water system and collecting data for evaluation of futnre projects. The project consists of metering and retrofitting
the community of Empire with low-flow fixtnres. This project will include metering residential, business and public facilities.

The Town of Empire has bad some difficulties in contracting for meter installations, Until the fall of 1995, Empire has not been able
to obtain a contractor because of its location and the relatively small number of meters to be installed, In the mean time, a letter from
the mayor to the townspeople and water conservation tips have gone out in each month's water bills, Distribution of water saving
devices should begin after meter installations are complete. A local student is developing a computerized record-keeping system to
analyze flows,
