Vail Valley Consolidated Water District
Water Conservation Master Plan

April 15, 1996
Page 6

d) The District will encourage managers of open space areas to evaluate the
efficiency of current irrigation practices and to defme practical ways to achieve
greater efficiency in water usage.

e) The District encourage Eagle County and other local governmental entities to
develop strategies to replace bluegrass with alternative grasses such as fescue and
other types of water efficient landscaping which require less water and are drought
resistant. These strategies could include educational programs and modification
of covenants and ordinances.

C. Water-efficient industrial and commercial water-using
processes

1. Purpose

A portion of water usage in the District system is associated with commercial
establishments consisting primarily of hotels and restaurants. This component of the
District's water conservation program is focused upon units that are 25 SFE or larger
where small reductions in use could save significant amounts of water and be
economically beneficial to participating entities through reduced water, sewer, and
energy bills. There are no significant manufacturing or industrial water users on the
treated water system.

2. Program

a) In 1995, the District began identifying and contacting commercial establishments
through mailings and seminars to increase awareness about the potential benefits
of water use efficiency measures. This program will be continued and refined on
a year-to-year basis as needed.

- ~-.:rentcar4s--lI!ld--.signs- ~BGooraging WaWF ~~nset'Vation praGtiees- have--been- .
distributed to commercial establishments including hotels and condominiums
complexes with short-term rentals for display in individual units. This program
will be continued and refined on a year-to-year basis as needed.

c) The District will develop and implement a water audit program within three years
to be offered to commercial establishments on a voluntary basis. This program
will be designed to identify wasteful practices and potential measures for
increasing water use efficiency.

d) In 1995, the District implemented an awards program to publicly recognize
commercial water users that have successfully implemented measures to reduce
their water demands and encourage efficiency.
