CIRCE operator's Manual
March 1994
4

Hardware Requirements

The MODEL is designed to operate on an IBM AT or compatible
computer with 286 processor or better, MS DOS 4.0 or higher, mouse,
math coprocessor, and operates best on a VGA or better monitor.
The program requires 2 ME RAM, 2 ME disk space, and expanded memory
manager for simulating expanded memory.

Water Conservation Measures

A basic set of water conservation assumptions for measures which
have been proven to show firm yield savings and permanently reduce
future demand have been incorporated in the Model. CIRCE works by
reducing future water demands in response to conservation measures.
This alJ.ows existing supplies to provide water service for a
greater population than would otherwise be possible. The Model
avoids those measures which require lifestyle changes and can be
readily reversed (e.g., rates) in favor of process oriented
measures which do not depend upon lifestyle changes.

The following water conservation measures are included in the
Model:

ULF toilets
ULF faucets
low flow showerheads
low flow dishwashers
low flow washing machines
xeriscape
soil sensors
non-potable supplies
leak detection .

New conservation measures can be added to the system as empirical
data becomes available.

Education is not included as a separate measure because it does not
meet the above criteria of permanent reduction in water usage.- It
is assumed, however, that education will be part of the overall
conservation program because a higher consciousness regarding water
usage and its value is essential to the acceptability and
sustainabi1ity of most any water program.
