TOWN OF CASTLE ROCK
"Teach By Example" Program Summary
Page 5

HARGROVE: 1766 Foxfield Dr.

The Hargroves had the potential to save around 8,300 gallons per year due to shower
head installation. This would have meant a savings/cost ratio of between 47 - 71 %.

ULV toilets should have saved the Hargroves over 22,000 gallons per year, yielding
a savings/cost ratio of between 13-19%.

The Hargroves actually experienced an increase in interior water consumption of 4.8
kgal/yr. Susan also runs a day care for between 2-4 children, beyond her own two children.
Several of these children were at the potty training stage during the program monitoring.
The number of toilet flushes at this address was consistently one third to twice the number
at the other addresses. Without the ULV toilets, excessive flushing alone could have cost
the Hargroves over 11,000 gallons/yr.

NETTLES: 929 Oakwood Dr.

The Nettles already had low flow shower heads. We installed the front loading
washer here and determined fairly specific interior results. The washer was rated to save
10,700 gallons per year, and did save 10,800! The savings/cost ratio for the washer was
between 7-11 %. The Nettles have very conservative interior water consumption habits!
And the washer just augmented their system!

EXTERIOR

The seven principles of xeriscape were applied in the design and implementation of
the exterior retrofit of each residence. Landscape designs were achieved through the
cooperative efforts of homeowners, staff, and citizen consultation.

Planning and design elements included consultations with homeowners as to what
they desired from their landscapes as far as function and maintenance. Design and plant
material selections were collaborative efforts between homeowners and professionals. Each
homeowner was supplied with information to assist in plant selection, and all were
encouraged to look around their neighborhoods for ideas that they wanted to include in
their landscapes. This area of the project was satisfying and of great importance to staff in
two of the three locations, because definitive plans were developed, as was the format as
to how to proceed with the exterior retrofit.

One location however seemed to have an ever evolving landscape plan. The
homeowners seemed to alter plans as we went, which created delays, budgetary pressures
, and misunderstandings that mushroomed into larger problems. This is where very specific
\
