The interior retrofit
is all but complete, with quality control, and consumption monitoring continuing.
As for the exterior retrofit, what a challengel Homeowners endured delayed schedules, and limited
resources, and lots of world The purpose of this program was educational; and boy, have we been getting an
education I .

Here is an update.....

In~,lo' R.froBI....

The Hoplclns...200 JohnlOl1 Drive, two adults and three children, home built in 1978. The interior
retrofit at their addiess consisted of one low volume washing machine, two 1.5 gallon ultra low volume toilets,
and one 2.25 gpm shower head.
Comments on the shower head were "..very little difference, and we're saving water.... The toilets
seem to work better than the old ones, but they did note some occasional mls-seating of the flapper. The
biggie was the low volume front loading washing machine. The Interior
retrofit consisted of three ultra low volume toilets, and two 2.25 gpm showers heads.
Comments on the shower heads were "I thought these would really cut down on the spray pressure,
but it is just fine." A concern about the low volume toilets was noted. They seem to clog more than the
conventional models, but they are easy to pluoge. We had some problems with one of the toilets running.
The plumber had to return twice, determining that the eotire toilet had to be replaced. Despite that problem,
the Hargraves say "we think they're jus~ floe. easy to clean too" Over all, positive feedbackl

The Nettles...929 Oakwood Drive, two adults and two children, home built in 1979. The Interior
retrofit consisted of one low volume front loading washing machioe. They were already using 2.5 gpm
shower heads; with great satisfaction. But once again, the clothes washer was a successl The Nettles noted
that it's not quite as large, capacity wise as their old washer,..."so I might be doing an extra load or two a
~eek, but the water bill Is lessl The clothes come out as clean, and .we have also notice a savings in detergent
tool" .

The interior rl!trofit was completed with the aid of Rode Plumbln,. Plans were derived to make the
most of not only the characteristics of the area being worked with, i.e. exposure, soillype, slope, wind, or
existing features, but to include what the desired function of the area was to be as well. One of the main
concerns, from all the homeowners was they wanted to decrease the amount of time they spent mowing the
lawn. Each home had well established areas of blue grass for children and outdoor activities. And, sInce
nothing puts up with heavy use like blue grass, these areas were maintained for the most pan.
