<br />.~ <br /> <br />Section 6 <br /> <br />WATER PRODUCTION & DISTRIBUTION <br /> <br />Water Treatment Plant <br /> <br />, <br />1 <br /> <br />Loveland operates one water treatment facility, Chasteen's Grove Water Treatment Plant, <br />located nine miles west of the city. The first treatment facility was a slow sand filter installed <br />at the present plant site in 1906. As growth continued, the City expanded and updated the <br />plant. The last expansion was in 1981 when the plant's capacity was expanded to 30 million <br />gallons per day (mgd) and designed for an additional expansion to 46 mgd. <br /> <br />Loveland's raw water supplies are of extremely high quality, except when the turbidity in- <br />creases in the Big Thompson River during the spring runoff. A water treatment optimization <br />study was completed in 1995 and identified capital projects to improve and optimize all com- <br />ponents and processes at the plant. <br /> <br />Water Production <br /> <br />Water production records show the amount of water leaving the water treatment plant <br />and entering the distribution system. The treatment plant records daily water production by <br />using a weir, an aperture that measures the rate of flow. The unit of measure for water pro- <br />duction is millions of gallons. <br /> <br />In 1995, the City discovered the weir was not calibrated correctly and hired an engineer- <br />ing firm to recalibrate it. The firm determined that flows three million gallons a day and be- <br />low were correct, but as flow became greater, the error increased based on a logarithmic <br />scale. High flows measured as much as 15 percent high. For instance, a flow of26 million <br />gallons a day measured on the weir would actually be 22.5 million gallons a day. <br /> <br />The production numbers used in this report were recorded from the weir.
