<br />During the late 1960's a new water treatment plant was <br /> <br /> <br />constructed to treat up to 16 million gallons per day of water. This <br /> <br /> <br />is the same plant that is still in service today providing customers <br /> <br />high quality treated water. <br /> <br />A major drought swept through the area in 1976/77 that caused <br /> <br />City planners to come up with some new ways to avoid future water <br /> <br />shortages. During the next couple of years, the City helped the <br /> <br /> <br />Clifton Water District construct a new treatment plant on the Colorado <br /> <br />River capable of treating B million gallons per day. With this <br /> <br />construction, the City was assured that up to 4 million gallons per <br /> <br />day would be available for City water customers if it were needed. The <br /> <br />City enlarged Juniata Reservoir to hold a years supply of water, along <br /> <br />with enlarging the pumping capabilities on the Gunnison river. <br /> <br />In 1989, the City took a major step by purchasing the Somerville <br /> <br />ranch and associated water rights.
