<br />Toilet <br />Showerhead <br />Faucet <br /> <br />Conventional <br />3,5 to 7.0 gal/flush <br />3,0 to 8.0 gpm <br />3.0 to 7.0 gpm <br /> <br />Low-Flow <br />1.6 gal/flush <br />2.5 gpm <br />2.5 gpm <br /> <br />Federal legislation now requires the manufacture of ultra-low volume (UL V) toilets which <br />require only 1.6 gallons per flush. UL V toilets are sometimes controversial because of <br />some reports which suggest the fixtures require a high level of maintenance. <br /> <br />A typical retrofit package consists of a low-flow showerhead, faucet aerators and a toilet <br />dam costs approximately $30 per package. Several studies have been conducted to <br />estimate water savings from a low-flow fixture retrofit program, It is estimated that by <br />converting standard fixtures to low flow fixtures, indoor water use could be reduced by <br />approximately 5%. It is the City's recommendation that residents convert to low-flow <br />fixtures on a voluntary basis. However, it is not the City's desire to require all residents <br />to convert to low-flow fixtures at this time. <br /> <br />2. Low water-use landscaping and efficient irrigation. Measures include xeriscaping <br />which is the application of drought-tolerant vegetation in a landscaped environment, the <br />use of drought-tolerant grasses in common areas, and the use of evapotranspiration data <br />for irrigation scheduling purposes. By using more efficient irrigation methods, irrigation <br />water requirements are typically reduced 7%. (CWCB, Office of Water Conservation, <br />1994) <br /> <br />Current landscape of the City consists of numerous varieties of trees and bluegrass variety <br />lawns which typically have high water requirements, The City is often noted for the large <br />lawns and beautiful landscaping maintained by the residents, At present, the City does <br />not have an ordinance which restricts the quantity of water that can be used for irrigation <br />unless residents are obviously wasting water. Also, since residential customers pay a flat <br />rate water rate, many customers do not irrigate their lawns efficiently. <br /> <br />It is not the desire of the City to change the current landscaping in the City. Water-efficient industrial and commercial water-using processes. Implementing <br />this measure would include an audit of large volume industrial or commercial water users <br />that would possibly lead to methods capable of reducing water consumption.
