1 ~ to ')

PREVENTING CROSS CONNECTIONS

A cross connection is any type of link which con-
nects a plumbing system directly to a contaminated
substance. When pressure changes suddenly, contami-
nated water could siphon back (backflow) into the
water lines. Illness or even death could result.

Colorado Primary Drinking Water Regulations
require public drinking wate'r suppliers, such as the
Ute District, to protect their distribution systems from
contamination due to backflow.

Ute Water meets this regulation by requiring all ser-
vice connections to have a District approved backflow
prevention device on the customers' side of the meter.
The District provides a backflow prevention device on
all new 3/4" residential service connections. All other
service connections must have a District approved
backflow prevention device installed at customer
expense.

Some potential household backflow hot spots are:
. garden hoses
. swimming pools (all types)
. in-ground lawn sprinkler systems
. fire sprinkler systems

Recommended installation
of hose bibb vacuum
breaker backflow preventer

-~-----

Note: in-ground and fire sprinkler systems require
an approved backf10w prevention device. Should you
install a sprinkler system that is connected to your
domestic water supply, please call the Cross
Connection Department at 464-5563.

'8

COMPARATIVE WATER BILLS

(based on LQQQ gallons/month used by a single
family residence as of 1/94.
Ute District
City of Grand Junction
Clifton Water District

$16.40
$16.46
$11.20

WORKING TOGETHER
FOR OUR FUTURE

The Ute Water Conservancy District is a single-
purpose entity formed solely for the purpose of pro-
viding domestic water service to rural and urbanizing
areas within its boundaries. Ute's Board of Directors
has had one goal: to provide the quality and quantity
of water that customers need...at the lowest price pos-
sible.

It is precisely the Board's prudent management that
has led to one key measure of success: Ute's base rate
for water, begun in 1963 at $7.0013,000 gallons, has
seen only one increase, in 1983, to $8.00/3,000 gal-
lons.

Unlike a relatively stable water rate, tap fees have
been increased a number of times to reflect a reason-
able return to the District for capital expenditures for
the facilities required to serve the influx of people into
the District.

So far as is reasonable and practical, those people
moving into the District, creating the needs for system
expansions, pay for them through the increased tap
fees, thus retiring the collateralized debt service which
financed the expansions.

The District maintains a "state of the art" treatment
- - .p1anl,Tsforage-tilnKs Wougnoufme l:Jlsfrfci. 900+
miles of pipeline and 2 reservoirs and has a staff of 52.

"{

The Board of Directors meets the second
Wednesday of each month at 7:30 p.m. at the Ute
Office, 560 25 Road, Grand Junction. The meetings
are open to the public.

F
'-

:-~

~~ .
