<br />GOAL <br />PUBLIC EDUCATION <br /> <br />The City's water \:onservation program should emphasize education for citizens so that they <br />understand the reasons and the methodologies for water conservation and can make informed <br />decisions regarding water use. <br /> <br />BEST MANAGEMENT PRACTICES <br /> <br />I. Act as :l resource and develop partnerships with the local School District <br /> <br />Status: Water/Wastewater Utilities has participated in a business partnership with the <br />fourth grade at Spangler Elementary School every year since 1993. The six-week <br />program includes a comprehensive overview of department functions. including <br />conservation, water resources, engineering, treatment and operations and maintenance. <br /> <br />Conservation programs are presented to classrooms on individual teacher requests. <br /> <br />Implementation: On-going. Explore additional activities: <br />. Facilitate introduction of Project WET (Water Education for Teachers) into local <br />schools. Project WET is a national project to facilitate and promote the awareness, <br />appreciation. knowledge and stewardship of water resources. Educational materials for <br />tea\:hers in grades K-12 are distributed by state sponsored programs. The Project WET <br />curriculum offers a\:tivity guides and modules for K-12 classrooms. Teacher training <br />workshops are offered by the State of Colorado Office of WateLConservation. <br />. Research available grant monies for special educational projects. <br />. Team with the Career Development Center on classroom projects. <br />. Assist with curriculum development, teacher training and resources. <br /> <br />2. Sponsor an annual water festival <br />A wate:r festival is a one-day event designed to provide an opportunity for students and <br />teachers to come together with natural resources experts to learn about water through <br />innovative hands-on activities. Most organizations target 4th-6th grade students because <br />it fits we!! with their curriculum. Working together with other agencies and organizations <br />is an important part of sponsoring a festival. The expertise and knowledge of <br />professionals from many areas provides an important balance of information and <br />viewpoints. <br /> <br />Status: Budgeted for first time in 1996. <br /> <br />Implementation: School district not receptive to raking students out of classroom. Look <br />for altlernative ways/forums to deliver program. <br /> <br />IY <br />
