,',"'-

2

SECTION 1. BACKGROUND

The Cherokee Water District was formed in 1957 to supply water service to
an area known as Cimarron Hills using water to be supplied from what is now the
Upper Black Squirrel Designated Ground Water Basin, Service began in 1963.

In the mid sixties, the Cimarron Sanitation District began operations to
treat wastewater from Cimarron Hills. A third District formed in 1978, provided
street lighting for this unincorporated area of EI Paso County,

In 1981, by a vote of the electorate, the water and sanitation districts were
merged into one district - the Cherokee Water and Sanitation District. The EI
Paso County commissioners in 1992 transferred all their park lands to Cherokee.
An election was held in May of that year to dissolve the street lighting district and
born Cherokee into a metropolitan district,

The District's final expansion came in March of 1995 with the purchase of a
golf course located in the District from the Resolution Trust Corporation.

The District currently encompasses approximately 6,700 acres and serves
some 15,300 customers.

A major water user, outside the boundaries of the District, is Falcon Air
Force Base. Falcon is located approximately nine miles east of the District
alongside the transmission line bringing water from the _Bla~k_ ~quirrel Basin,

Over the past several years the District's water sales have averaged almost
2,680 acre feet,

SECTION 2. INVENTORY

2.1 Water Supply/Storage

Raw water is obtained from the Upper Black Squirrel Designated Ground
Water Basin. The water is collected from a thirteen well system in the basin and
is pumped over 20 miles into the District.
