'l
I
I
\
HI
I

CITY OF CORTEZ WATER CONSERVATION PLAN

INTRODUCTION

The City of Cortez has had a full history of dealing with water issues in its 100-
plus years of existence. A secure water supply that will serve our population for the next
30 to 40 years has been acquired and the City will continue to look at ways to further
extend that supply.

Water conservation is a means for the City to extend its water supply to serve
more residents in the future, merely by being more efficient in the way water is utilized.
For example, the City's per capita consumption of 300 gallons per capita per day (gped)
could potentially be dropped to 270 gped which would allow water for an additional 1500
people,

An equal benefit of water conservation is that if the demand on water supplies
can be lessened, especially during peak summer use, the City's infrastructure will not
have to be upgraded as soon. Significant savings can be realized by delaying major
construction for several years.

2
