05-07-1992 10; 03At'1 FRO~1 SOLAR TECHI,OLOG'( I HST.

TO

18662115

P.02

adding one toilet retrofit kit, installing one showerhead,
and up to three faucet aeratorS. For another group, we will
only be installing the showerhead and faucet aerators. The
last group will bea mixture of the two depending on how
efficient the toilets and existing fixtures are.

For the toilet replacement component we will only replace
old toilets that use the most water per flush. We will only
replace one toilet per household. If we have a house with a
bad floor or a potential of extensive repair/rehab work then
we will not pursue the replacement due to our limited budget.

The project will generate another benefit besides the
conservation of water. Changing showerheads and faucet
aerators will also conserve electricity and natural gas by
reducing the amount of hot water used in the household. We
intend to monitor these savings on a selected small sample of
the 150 households. These results will be compiled in 1993
along with monitoring the overall water savings and included
in a report to the Office of Water Conservation. We hope
that this additional benefit will help promote similiar
programs in the future for other communities.

If we are contacted by other interested households that do
not have a meter, we will make the water saving devices
available at a discounted price. In this way, we will be
able to stimulate even more water conservation.

All project components will be the same for both Carbondale
and Glenwood Springs households. we will contact the City of
Grand Junction, Greg Trainor, to lea~n from their experience
with a water conservation retrofit project. We do not plan
to "reinvent the wheel" so all efforts will be made to use
forms and hardware that have been field tested.

CONTACT PEOPLE

The Town of Carbondale is the lead agency responsible for the
contract. The Town Manager, Davis Farrar and Bruce Stolbach,
Building Official, are the primary contacts with the Town.
Leslie Rlusmire, Community Development Director, will be the
primary contact person with the City of Glenwood Springs.
The Town will contract with the Roaring Fork Energy Center
for administration/implementation of the project. Steve Standiford,
Director and Larry Puleo, Project Manager, will be the
contact people at the RFEC.
