.

.

proiect implementation:
The City is currently pursuing a partnership with the Colorado
state Cooperative Extension Service to provide CSU senior year
landscape architecture students with the opportunity to work
on this project. Preliminary conversations indicate that the
students will prepare the design and specifications for this
model plot. This is a project which could provide a great
learning experience for the CSU students, and is very
attractive to the Cooperative Extension service and CSU. We
are currently involved in conversations with the Cooperative
Extension Service agent to identify this as a spring project
for the landscape architecture class. This has been considered
a viable option at this point, but has not been finalized with
the extension service or CSU. Should timing not allow for the
CSU students to provide the design and plans, the City will
hire a landscape architect to prepare the plans and
specifications.

Once the design and specifications are prepared, the city will
bid out the project and provide construction management.
Throughout construction, through partnership with the Fremont
County Cooperative Extension Service, educational brochures
and identifying signage for plants will be prepared.

Participants in this proiect:
Participants in this project include the Water Department and
Parks Department of the City of Canon City and the local and
state levels of the Cooperative Extension Service.

Additional partnerships have been formed between the City and
the Sangre de Cristo Resource Conservation & Development
Council, the Natural Resources Conservation Service, and Farm
Services Agency in an attempt to bring some of this region's
goals of water conservation to fruition. Future plans being
undertaken by these partnerships include the development of an
evapotranspiration weather station, and continued promotion by
all agencies of water conservation practices.

2. Describe the methods you are proposing to use to monitor or
track the change in water use as a result of the project.
Also, briefly describe how you propose to evaluate the project
results and publicize the results in your area.

Methods to monitor or track chanqe in water use:
The City of Canon City's Water Department will monitor the
water usage at this model. A separate meter will be used to
track water amounts. This data will be compared to the data
collected on other, more traditionally landscaped city
properties to provide a comparison of water usage and cost per
square foot for maintenance of each landscaping type. Changes
to watering schedules and amounts will be accounted for during
plant maturation. This comparison information will be made
available to the public through the city and the partnership
offices of those agencies listed above. We will publicize the
results utilizing the mediums identified below.
