FROM :LAMAR WATER FAX NO. :719-336-4404 Aug. 06 2004 08:21AM P1
August 5,2004
To Whom It May Concern:
The City of Lamar would like to express an interest in and its support of any drainage
improvements in Prowers and Bent County to both the underground drainage and the surface
drainage systems which drain communities and agriculture land lying in the lower Arkansas
River Valley basin.
These drainage systems were developed 50+years ago and have not been maintained effectively;
they are in dire need of maintenance and/or replacement to prevent damage to personal property
and/or reduced agricultural production.
I believe the study team is well qualified and know that they have been working on other
important projects in the lower Arkansas Valley. I believe that such projects have contributed to
economic growth in the lower Arkansas valley.
The drainage ditches are a major concern due to vegetation overgrowth and neglect. The
capacity of the drainage ditches has been reduced dramatically and the ditches arc no longer
capable of safely and effectively carrying the amount of water they were designed for.
Many of the underground systems that were put in place were never adequately mapped as to
their location, size or the type of material utilized in the installation. The underground system
has not been adequately maintained;root intrusion and other foreign materials are restricting the
flow and sometimes actually plug the entire system.
Thank you for your consideration in this endeavor.
Very truly yours,
fnl r k
Dannie McMillan
Public Works Director
CITY Or LAMAR
102 EAST PARMFNTER 6 LAMAR, COLORADO 81052-3239
719/336-4376 6 FAX 719/336-2787
36
