Deliverables for $30,000 installment from the CWCB to DWCD <br /> for the River Protection Workgroup <br /> Date: September 10, 2012 <br /> Task 1: Continue to plan, with the RPW Steering Committee, the Animas <br /> River Workgroup and conclude this group with a written report. <br /> The RPW for the Animas River has been meeting since October 2011 and is set <br /> to conclude likely by the end of December 2012. The group has: <br /> • Met 13 times, engaging over 175 people, groups and interests. In June, a <br /> meeting of downstream users and interested public was held in Durango. <br /> Participated in a field trip (10/11) that focused on several natural values <br /> (Black Swift birds and Iron Fen plant communities), plus local economic <br /> issues and work done by the Animas River Stakeholders. <br /> Developed and agreed to a Values Statement: <br /> http://ocs.fortlewis.edu/riverprotection/animas/handouts.htm <br /> • Agreed to an extensive Information Sheet that was reviewed four times: <br /> http://ocs.fortlewis.edu/riverprotection/animas/handouts.htm <br /> • Learned from speakers on: Water 101, Wild and Scenic River issues, <br /> other river protection tools, the economic picture of the area (current and <br /> potentially foreseeable economic development), Animas River <br /> Stakeholders Group, and CWCB tools including In-Stream Flow <br /> • Completed a segment-by-segment analysis to outline values, current <br /> protection and ideas for these six areas: Mineral, South Mineral, main <br /> stem of the Animas up to Silverton, Upper Animas, and two sections of <br /> Cement Creek <br /> • The group is currently in the process of determining areas where they <br /> might find common ground, agreement and/or articulate various <br /> viewpoints on the adequate levels of protection of values. Three current <br /> points of consensus include: <br /> - No dams in the main stem of the Animas <br /> - Support efforts, including those being done by the Animas River <br /> Stakeholders, to continue to improve water quality in the Upper Animas <br /> basin <br /> - Respect private property rights <br /> 1 <br />
