March 24, 2006
Jack Rogers, P.E.
Public Works Director
City of Durango
Dear Jack:
We have researched the estimated economic benefit of the commercial rafting and kayaking
companies in the City of Durango. The Parks and Recreation Department issues annual permits
to companies each year. In 2005, the City issued 10 permits. The companies to which the
permits were issued are listed below. The commercial operations generally operate from April
through October, however, there is also year round kayak training which occurs on the Animas
River in town. The estimated economic benefit to the City for the commercial rafting and
kayaking operations for 2005 is $2,375,000. Additionally, there are over 200 employees in the
boating industry. The economic benefit is a conservative estimate as it does not take into
consideration any multiplier effect associated with rafting and kayaking visitors to Durango
spending money on items such as lodging or dining. Please advise if you need any additional
information for the Colorado Water Conservation Board.
Commercial rafting and kayaking companies to which permits were issued by the City of
Durango in 2005:
Wild to Wild Rafting
Kakakuk Kamps
Four Corners River Sports
Mountain Waters Rafting
Adaptive Sports Association
Flexible Flyers Rafting
Southwest Whitewater
Outlaw Tours
Peregrine River Outfitters
Durango Rivertrippers
Cathy Metz
Parks and Recreation Director
City of Durango
949 E.
