Necessary Flows for the Durango Boating Park
Expected flow is a key part of the design process. Necessary flows for a particular design in
a particular reach of the Animas River are based on a variety of factors and it was found in
this study that the required flow regime for certain Structures at the Durango Boating Park
was different than at others, as were the City's intended usage at the different Structures.
The flow regime for the Upper Boating Park Structures, to provide for the named
experiences, is listed in Table 1, shown below:
Flow Regime
The Durango Boating Park--Upper Structures
Dates
Flow Rate
Usage
Structures
#5, #9
1 -Jan
185
Winter training for local and visiting athletes as well as winter recreational
boaters
14 -Mar
1 -Ma
250
Increased power for winter training and recreational boaters
31 -Ma
1 -A r
400
Increased power for winter training, beginning of freestyle skills practice and
recreational boater tune -up
14 -A r
15-Apr
850
Early season attraction, spring training freestyle /slalom, recreational boating
30-Apr
1 -Ma
1200
Tourist attraction, whitewater destination, local and national level racing and
freestyle, attractive commercial rafting, instructional, spectators
14 -Ma
15 -Ma
1250
Tourist attraction, whitewater tourist destination, local and national level racing
and freestyle, top -level commercial rafting, instructional, spectators
31 -May
1 -Jun
1400
Marquis attraction, International eve competition, whitewater es ina ion,
premier commercial rafting attraction, recreational boating, instructional,

14 -Jun
15-Jun
1200
Tourist attraction, whitewater destination, local and national level racing and
freestyle, rafting, instructional, spectators
30 -Jun
1 -Jul
900
Mid -to -late season attraction, instructional inflatible traffic, commercial rafting,
hard boat recreational usage and training for local athletes
14 -Jul
1 Jul
600
Mid -to -late season attraction, instructional, inflatable traffic, commercial rafting,
hard boat recreational usage and training for local athletes
31 -Jul
1 -Au
400
Late season attraction, instructional inflatable traffic, commercial rafting, hard
boat recreational usage and training for local athletes
14 -Au
15-Auci
300
Hard boat recreational usage, inflatable /inner tube usage, ducky trips,
instructional and training for local athletes
30-Se
1 -Oct
185
Winter training for local and visiting athletes as well as winter recreational
boaters
31 -Dec
Table 1.
